Need Your Voice
I just got this from Flagstaff Biking Organization:
Deadline Extended!! Please Comment on the Walnut Canyon Study!
Flagstaff Biking Organization is urging all of Flagstaff’s cyclists to comment on the Walnut Canyon Study. This study, in part, is to determine the suitability of the Walnut Canyon area for expansion of the Walnut Canyon National Monument. Expansion of the Monument would be problematic at best for mountain biking on the Arizona Trail, Flagstaff Loop Trail and the Campbell Mesa Trails. Please use the information below to let decision makers know that mountain biking on Campbell Mesa, Walnut Canyon Rim, Fisher Point, Arizona Trail and Flagstaff Loop Trail is important to you! Please see Flagstaff Biking Organization’s formal comments to the consultant.
…and go here to submit your own comments!
Comment deadline is July 26th, 2010!!
Here is the message that I sent:
To Whom It May Concern:
Keeping mountain biking as an option on Campbell Mesa, Walnut Canyon Rim, Fisher Point, Arizona Trail and Flagstaff Loop Trail is vital to the Flagstaff community. That system of trails is the only trail access in that area, and provides a unique trail system that can not be found in the rest of Flagstaff. Closing it to bikes effectively removes the mountain bike community from having any vested interest in maintaining the trails, or cooperating with officials in charge of the Walnut Canyon area. The mountain bike community should be credited with much of the construction of the trails in that area (notably: Campbell Mesa and Flagstaff Loop Trail), so removing mountain bikes from access to those trails is particularly ironic.
The mountain biking community as a whole is a very respectful group, driven with environmentally conscious ideas. We want the same things as hikers, equestrians, runners, and other trail users: access to the beauty in and around the place we call home.
Thank you for your time,
Dara Marks Marino

most people either didn’t read the proposal, or missed this part of it: quote: 3. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding will continue as currently permitted (subject
to prudent management decisions). [Implicit here is that the Flagstaff Loop Trail will be
completed as currently planned and that appropriate connections will be constructed.]
Other uses will be addressed in the management plan. - end quote. all BLM rules would apply, which are often “looser” the USFS. the expansion of WC natl’ monument has been coming for awhile, and would only concern the one canyon about 1/2 way from WC to fisher pt., with a re-route scheduled. i find the FBO responsa alarmist, with little work done to check the facts, down to apparently not even reading the proposal - the quote re: mtn biking is buried all the way at the top of the 2nd page - Garro.

Thanks for the clarification, Garro. I guess better safe than sorry in ensuring access.
